A Clinico Pathological Correlation of FNAC and Histopathology of Thyroid Swellings: A Hospital-Based Prospective Study

Background: Fine needle aspiration cytology is a diagnostic tool in which cells are extracted from palpable swelling using FNAC gun or syringe and needle. It simple, speedy, safe, cost effective accurate technique being used worldwide. But, pitfalls come along making the correlation with histopathology often necessary. Materials Methods: This study was prospective conducted among 30 patients undergoing thyroidectomy for thyroid swellings ENT department, Bangalore Medical College Research Institute, Bangalore. Patients were evaluated by detailed history, clinical examination, preoperative FNAC, function tests. Results: Thirty who underwent during period selected. Among cases all specimen sent gross microscopic examination. Two of malignant neoplasms detected, one benign according to FNAC. Most common lesion multinodular goiter. Correlation lesions, sensitivity found be 50%, specificity 100%, negative predictive value 96.5 % positive 100%. p-value<0.01, showing that there strong between findings. Conclusion: Thyroid pathologies frequently encountered otolaryngology clinics. Often initial minimally invasive procedure assessment swelling.
